Tithes: Bubwith

Commonwealth Survey of 1651

During the Commonwealth Survey held at Beverley on the 25 November 1651, it was reported by the Commissioners that the tythes of Bubwith, Harlethorpe, Gribthorpe and Foggathorpe are the inheritance of Mr. John Arrys and the heirs of Mr. Thomas Doleman and were worth in total one hundred and ten pounds yearly.

Bubwith Tithe File, TNA, IR 18/11509

The Bubwith tithe file at TNA contains very little. It simply informs us that the tithes of Bubwith (and Harlethorpe) were extinguished by the Bubwith Enclosure Act, passed 2 Will IV (1832). The award was dated 15 June 1838, and enrolled at Beverley 26 June 1838.

The Dean and Chapter of York owns one moiety of the great tithes (Henry John Dickens their lessee); and the other moiety was owned by John Dunnington Jefferson. The vicar of Bubwith, Rev. John Wilkinson, receives the small tithes.

The allotments were as follows:

Dean and Chapter, £150 0s 30d
John Dunnington Jefferson, £140 2s 30d
Vicar of Bubwith, £37 0s 20p
