To all who shall see or hear this writing Richard Abbot of Melsa and the Convent of the same place greeting Know ye that we have given and granted and by the present charter confirmed to Thomas the son of Robert de Hugate and his heirs or assigns, religious rights excepted, 2 bovates of land in the territory of Herlethorp’ with 2 tofts in the same vill and all other appurtenances. Namely those 2 bovates of land with 2 tofts and all other appurts. which Hugh the son of Roger de Ellerton' at one time held of us. To hold and to have freely and quietly by his homage and service for ever for 12 pence yearly for all service to the fabric fund of our church payable at our grange of Blanchemarl’ at Pentecost. Provided, however, that the same Thomas or his heirs shall render the foreign service demanded of them. We will truly warrant all these things as is aforesaid to the said Thomas and his heirs or his assigns according to the religious laws for the before mentioned rent for ever. These being witnesses: Thomas de Lutton’; William de Garton; Oliver de Gunnebi; James de Collu(m); Robert the son of Geoffrey; William de Sancto Jacobo; Peter de Herlethorp; Hugh Tisun; Geoffrey de Colevil; Thomas de Bolut (? Seal in green wax, vesica about 15/8" x 7/8": central device is a small crosier, either supported by the hand of a vested arm proceeding from the left, or bearing on its shaft a standard flowing to the left. Circumscription -

+ SIGIL ABBATIS + DE MELSA.

Parchment 7" x 55/8" indented, lightly mildewed and shows three tiny holes, but still in good condition. Endorsed by an Elizabethan hand “Harlethroppe”.

To all whom this present writing shall come friar Roger called the Abbot of  Melsa and the Convent of the same place, send greeting, know ye that we have ratified and confirmed to William the son of Alexander de Harlethorp' that donation which Thomas the son of Roger Hugate holding in Harlethorp' made to him of one bovate and land with a toft and croft and other appurtenances in Herlethorp. So that the aforesaid William may hold the aforesaid tenement of us in chief by due and customary service,in ttestimony whereof we have set our seal to the present written cyrograph. Given at Melsa' the day of our Lord's Epiphany in the year of Our Lord 1296, these being witnesses:-

To all who may see or hear this writing, William Blanchard de Bubwith greeting in the Lord. Know ye that I have acknowledged, granted, restored, released and altogether for me and my heirs …….. (and) assigns quitclaimed for ever to Thomas the son of William de Gunneby all right and claim which I had or could have had in 4 ac land with their appurtenances in the vill and territory of Bubwith which Thomas the son of Richard the Clerk of Gunneby, the uncle of the said Thomas had of the gift and grant of Hugh Blanchard de Bu(bwi)th my father. So, in fact, that neither I William nor my heirs nor assigns nor anyone in our name may for ever he able to challenge or claim a right in the aforesaid 4 ac land with their appurts..... reserving to me, my heirs or assigns a rent of one penny to he received annually for the aforesaid land, in testimony whereof I have set my seal to this present writing, these being witnesses:

This Indenture witnesseth that we, Thomas Smyt de Lathom' and Richard the son of Stephen de Bubwith have given, granted and by this our present charter confirmed to William de Herlthorp all our lands and tenements, rents and services which we have in the fields of Herlthorp and Aghton' with meadows, feedings, pastures ------- easements and other their appurts. whatsoever within the said fields of Herlthorp, and   ----------- outside the fields of Herlthorp in the fields of Aghton' with all animals and. other beasts --------- which same lands and tenements we formerly had of the gift and feoffment of a certain William ------- lands and tenements aforesaid, the rents and services aforesaid, together with meadows and pastures and all other (appurts) ------------- whatsoever, with free ingress and egress to the same William for the whole of his life, from the chief lords of those fees by the services therefore due and of right accustomed. We desire also and by these presents firmly grant that all the aforesaid lands and tenements, rents and services with feedings, pastures, and all other commodities, easements and appurtenances, together with free ingress and egress which after the deaths of the same William should revert to us, may remain to Stephen de Herlthorp the son and heir of the same William, and Joan his wife and the heirs freely issuing from their bodies to have and to hold of the high lords of those fees by the services therefor due and of right accustomed for ever. And if the aforesaid Stephen and Joan shall happen to die without heir of their bodies lawfully begotten, then we desire that all the lands and tenements aforesaid, rents and services aforesaid with feedings, pasture and all other commodities, easements &c with appurtenances together with free ingress and egress &c may remain for ever to the right heirs of the aforesaid William de Herlthorp: to have and to hold from the high lords of those fees by the services due and of right accustomed   --------------- (and truly we the said) Thomas and Richard and our heirs (will) warrant, acquit and for ever defend all the aforesaid lands, tenements, meadows, rents and services &c ------- (in testimony whereof both our seals and the seals of the aforesaid ------- de Herlthorp and Stephen (have set to these presents). John Gunby de Bubwith and Alice his wife let and demise to Thomas Farnhill "fost'io" (? forester) of Newsom and Margaret his wife the Eastern half of a capital messuage with half of a toft and croft adjacent and one bovate of land called Fyformyn and a quarter of another bovate of land called Laundesdale Lande with the meadows, feedings, pastures appurtinent in the vill &c. of Bubwith for a certain sum of money beforehand paid, from the Feast of St. Martin in Winter next coming for term of 14 years paying to John and Alice or their attorney one red rose at the Feast of St. John the Baptist if demanded for all services. Tenants to repair and maintain the premises, sealed alternately.

Richard Gunbe of Bubwith, son and heir of Robert Gunbe of the same place & William Croft, vicar of Bubwith have granted &c to Henry Vavasour of Hesilwode esq., John Vavasour of Spaldyngton’, William (Vavasour), brother of the said Henry, Johanna Gunbe, wife of the said Richard & John Wayde, clerk; the capital messuage with all other cottages, crofts, gardens & other lands, meadows &c. in the vill & fields of Bubwith, together with 1 messuage with a croft & 4 bovates of land & ½ bovate of arable land & all other crofts, meadows, woods &c. in Herelthorpe (Herlletthorpe) …… habendum to the grantees for term of their lives from the high lords &c., with warranty after their death to Elizabeth Wode, sister of the said Richard and her legitimate heirs. Further Richard Gunbe grants to henry & John V., W.V., Joan Gunbe his wife & John wayde all his goods, beasts & cattle movable and immovable within the realm…..

(RICHARD) Smyth de  Northduffylde, the right heir of Henry Smith lately decd, gives &c. to HENRY RIPPLEY of Bubwith and Helena his wife , a cottage in the vill of Bubwith lying between a cottage of the heirs of Thomas (? B)uyght knight, lately decd., on East and a cottage of (? Anthony) Langdayll on West, and abbutting on the causeway (calcetum) on south side and upon a croft of the aforesaid Anthony Langdayll on north side. Habendum & tenendum the sd cottage with appurtenances to sd Henry & Helena & Henry's heirs of the high lords of that fee &c. &c. forever.

Warranty against all people forever...

1 mesg., 1 cottage & 2 crofts & 4 bovates of land & 7 ac land called Forby (? ss)lande & 2 ac meadow called Forbymedow in Bubwyth & 3 ac land in Willetoft & all other her land, tenements &c. in the sd county habendum to John &c. to grantors use for term of her life, thereafter to the use of Christopher Ryley her son & the legitimate heirs of his body whom failing to Elena & her heirs, tenendum of the high lords.

 

Endorsed with memorandum of seisin delivered on same day to Richard Savage & Richard Ryley in the presence of John Sob—k—oke (fonatiu ?? illegible) de Bubwyth, Thomas Blanchard, William savage, John Wyllyamson, Richard Harberd, Thomas Knyght, & William Turnbull.

Messuage and land following in Foggathorpe:- close of 30 acres called the Upper Car Close of 48 acres called the Middle Carr. Close of 35 acres called the New Close. Half of parcel of ground called the Lane, adjoining the above messuage and extending from the well to the middle of the Lane. Parcel of ground called the Carr.

Probate and will (dated 1 Feb 1712/13) of John Lawton of Spaldington in parish of Bubwith (E.R.). Devise to 3rd son Jonathon of 1 acre in the Flatt Field, 3½ roods in the Town End Close, 2 half acres and a half rood in the But Field. Devise to youngest son, Joseph of 1 acre in the Smewling Bottoms, half an acre in the Elderams, 2 half acres in Booth Field, 1 three rood land in the Span Bridge (Rest of legacies are of money).
