ELLERTON, (p.) in the wap. of Harthill; 9 miles SW. of Pocklington. Here

was formerly a Priory of Canons of the Sempringham Order, founded by William Fitz Peter, before the year 1212, which continued to flourith until the 11th of December, 1536; when this priory was surrendered, by John Golding, the prior. Here is a chapel dedicated to St. Mary, of which John Bethell, Esq. is patron, there is also a Methodist chapel. Population, 318.
