ELLERTON, or ELLERTON PRIORY, is a parish and township, in the union and county court district of Howden; Holme Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and York diocese; 3 miles north from Bubwith station, on the Selby and Market Weighton Railway, 9 north-west from Howden, and situated on the east of the river Derwent. The church of St. Mary is a handsome stone building, in the Norman style, having chancel, nave, north aisle, and small spire with 2 bells; all the windows contain a portion of stained glass from the Old Priory. The register dates from the year [ blank ]. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £110, in the gift of the Rev. Joseph Dunnington Jefferson, and held by the Rev. Henry Collins, of St. Aidans. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists, also almshouses for three poor people. The landowners are Miss Hall, J. Lund, esq., and H. G. Bridges, esq. The soil is sand and clay; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, potatoes, barley, oats, and turnips. The acreage is 2,552; and rateable value, £3,276; the population in 1871 was 328.
